Visit Shaoshan Village
Shaoshan Village, the birthplace of Chairman Mao Zedong, offers a glimpse into the life of the man who shaped modern China. This historic site, once a pivotal base during the Communist Revolution, has become a focal point for “red tourism,” boosting the local economy while fostering understanding of China’s revolutionary past. Begin your journey at Dripping Water Cave, a short distance from Mao’s former residence. This enigmatic structure, built during the Cultural Revolution, houses an earthquake-proof room and an atomic shelter. Next, explore the Former Residence of Mao Zedong, a humble abode that reflects the family’s peasant lifestyle. Authentic farm tools offer a tangible connection to Mao’s early life. Conclude your visit at the Mao Ancestral Temple, where personal belongings and manuscripts provide deeper insights into the life of this iconic figure.
