Diaoyu Fortress
Founded in 1243, Diaoyu Fortress, perched on a hill surrounded by a river on three sides, is renowned for its valiant defense against the Mongol armies during the waning years of the Southern Song Dynasty. In 1259, the Mongol Khan Möngke met his demise during the siege of the fortress, forcing a hasty retreat of Mongol troops from Syria and signaling a significant turning point in their global conquest. Over the course of thirty-six years, from 1243 to 1279, the fortress endured more than two hundred military attacks, standing as a testament to its resilience.
